How To Make A Good Video Resume

Raya

Video resumes are modernizing the job-search process as we know it. A video resume is, a short video created by a job seeker to showcase their abilities beyond the capabilities of a traditional paper resume. Video resumes, also known as Visume, have been around since the 80’s but have recently taken off due to the growth of broadband connections and easy-to-use video-making applications. A visume done correctly can have impressive results but done poorly, can affect your chances of getting an interview. If you’re thinking about going down the video resume route, we’ve got some tips for you below.

Do your research:

First, start off by looking at other video resumes online.  Watching other people’s visumes you will show you what works and what doesn’t. To get an idea of what a video resume should look like, view a good example here.

Be professional and make sure it is appropriate:

Just like a traditional written resume, you need to keep your video resume professional.

  • Dress the same way you would dress for a job interview.
  • Make sure the background and location of your video is appropriate. Cluttered, unorganized backgrounds are distracting and hiring managers’ notice.  The safest and best thing to do is film in front of a solid colored wall.
  • The title of your video is important. Titles with your name and the words video resume make it easier for recruiters to find your visume

Don’t read off your resume:

Reading off your resume is the most common visume mistake. The main purpose of a video resume is to show the employer who you are, not tell them. The video will not replace your traditional resume; you still need to submit a written resume.

Keep it short and to the point:

Recruiters do not have a lot of time to sit through a lengthy video. Keep your video between one and two minutes; the shorter the better. If your video resume doesn’t grab the recruiter’s attention, they will stop watching after 20-30 seconds. Remember to organize your video in a clear and concise way; it will make it easy to follow along.

Be yourself:

Your personality is going to help differentiate you in today’s “employer’s market.” A video resume is your chance to show who you are and how employers decide if you will be a good fit for their organization. Also, a visume is a great way to show off your talents and skills, so don’t be afraid to get creative, especially if you are applying for a design or marketing job. Remember: First impressions are everything, so always smile and stare straight into the camera.
